Any girl out there between the ages of 12 and 50ish in the state of Utah is aware that the new Stephenie Meyer book is coming out on August 4, right? The title is Breaking Dawn. I am excited for this book, I love a good series and I especially love it when the series wraps up. I will miss my characters, but I will be able to revisit them whenever I want to borrow the books from friends (I am way too cheap to purchase books, especially at full price). I am wishing I had one of those "Team Edward" t-shirts. (You Jacob fans out there, and you know who you are, don't bother telling me Jacob is better, I am thoroughly devoted to Edward!!)
My point is that there are A LOT of women out there who have read and LOVE these books. So we were in Denver last week and missed our home ward sacrament meeting, but this is what I heard....from Karen....A woman came to speak and was talking about a guy whose skin sparkles in the sunlight. Karen barely heard what this woman was saying because her kids (Karen's) were commanding all of Karen's attention. Karen thought maybe this lady's kid had some sort of skin condition. So Karen goes into the library (she serves as ward librarian, or assistant) and the other librarian proceeds to tell Karen that the lady in sacrament meeting was talking about Edward in the book Eclipse.
What? Someone was really quoting from Stephenie Meyer's book in sacrament meeting? That is hilarious! Almost as funny as when people used to bear their testimonies that The Work and The Glory book series was true.
What are people thinking? I don't mind mentioning pop culture in Sunday School or R.S., and even then a teacher should be very careful, but over the pulpit in sacrament meeting?
I hate to say this, but maybe there should be a memo about this from Salt Lake. I would classify this kind of memo under the "I thought that was obvious" kind of category of memo's from SLC. I feel bad, I am sure this lady was well intentioned, but this kind of activity isn't such a good idea.
Since I won't be purchasing this book, I have a friend in the ward who says I can have her copy to read as soon as she is finished. Since she will be picking up her copy on midnight August 2, I am pretty sure she will be handing over this treasure sometime on Sunday August 3. I cannot wait!!!

That is the funniest thing I have heard in a LONG time!! And, I too will be picking up my copy early....I can't say that I would go as far as wearing a t-shirt, but I do enjoy the books and will read it before any other. See you soon!
I really wish the author of these books were not LDS. I held her to a higher standard and I was disappointed. I loved the first book, even though I thought the romance was way too intense for high school. The other books got edgier and edgier and it really disappointed me. I do love the story line and the suspense, but I had a hard time getting past some of the other stuff. My young women are so into these books, which is why I chose to read them. We have had discussions about these books in meetings because of the way the girls have been affected. I am nervous about the next book, because each book has gotten worse as far as morals go. A few years ago this would never have crossed my mind, but after working with the young women I am hyper sensitive to it. I wish she would have marketed this as an adult fiction instead of young adult, these girls are having trouble distinguishing between fact and fiction, and if I hear one more word about Edward as if he were a real person I may go crazy. The fact that some lunatic mentioned him from the pulpit makes my blood boil even more.
I understand the intrigue, I really do. I just wish she had stayed true to LDS standards and not let the world and book sales drive her. I'll get off my soapbox now.
Will I read the book? Only time will tell, I like you Jeanna refuse to spend money on it.
my goodness! this is the kind of mormon culture things that makes me cringe! who are these people?!!!! and what wire in your head sparked and made you go crazy enough to quote a non-scripture reference in you sacrament talk. it's right up there on my list with mormons who like the 49'ers. yikes!
A few weeks ago, there was a memo read in Sacrament meeting about the use of inappropriate visual aids for sacrament meeting talks like powerpoint presentations. I thought that was hysterical that a memo would have to be released. I know we live in the age of communication, but less is more people! Plain and simple truths. Stick to the scriptures and guidance from our leaders and you can't go wrong. I wonder if that woman got a talking too after sacrament meeting.
I've not read the books yet, I've had a lot of other things that I'm reading first. I will probably read them eventually though.

Although, I must confess that in seminary when we were studying church history and the Doctrine and Covenants, I finished the Doctrine and Covenants early so I read the work and the glory series...it's kind of like church history...right?! Don't get me wrong, I know (and knew then) that its fiction. I just liked it!
I think I am just about the only person who hasn't loved the vampire books. I won't be spending any money on them either.
