Is WO a word? Probably not, but it got me 20 points and my kids didn't challenge it. The bonus of playing with the kids; if mom lays a word down they figure it must be a real word. H had a Sunday night priesthood meeting (Don't get me started) so the kids and I played Scrabble. Herein lies my problem with this game. After about 3 or 4 rounds the kids were having a hard time finding words that worked with their letters and the layout of the board. This means that I was playing for everyone. Let me just say...I don't enjoy playing Scrabble Solitaire. But I did enjoy playing with the kids. They are pretty cute, although they are supposed to be in bed right now and someone is playing the song from Hercules (I have often dreamed, in a far off place, that a worldwide welcome will be waiting for me....) on a recorder in their room. This works out for Harold because he needed someone to scratch his back and since they are awake anyway he may as well exploit their talents. (I hate scratching a back that is clothed, my fingernails on fabric gives me the willies.)
My scripture for the days is Matthew 5:6 "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled." Think about this scripture in relationship to our bodies hungering for things, physically, emotionally. But is it the spirit that is really hungering and needs to be filled?

I haven't played scrabble in ages. I Love that game even though I'm not the best speller. I like games that make you think.....otherwise I get bored.
That is so fun! Playing scrabble is a great way to help your kids stretch their vocabulary. When my boys were younger we would play open book (meaning they could use the dictionary, but I couldn't)and that helped them to learn a lot of words. I would give them extra points if they used one of their spelling words from that week. We still play pretty regularly, but we enjoy Boggle even more.
Bill's mom used to play scrabble with the kids all the time. (especially the girls) We played scrabble alot on the cruise. We had alot of days a sea. The other two couples we went with (the wives) were pros. I would put a punny word on the board and they'd say. "Can we look at your letters and maybe help you come up with something with more points" They were into it big time. I eventually would go down and read or knit while they played. Oh fun that you were playing a game with your kids. Memories.
The only problem with making up words is that your kids believe they are real. Imagine the sentence...As we were walking accross the street I noticed a car coming around the corner too fast. I pulled my friend back and said, "wo buddy, watch out!"
Can you see the argument now when the teacher says wo is not a word. It would be pretty funny to watch though. Kids are soooo justified in their own minds. I love it.
Is that you Ann? My family are cut throat scrabble players so I have a definite competitive streak when it comes to that game. But my argument is that the teachers of my children let them write the most horrifically spelled words and NEVER correct them, at least not on the work I have seen. No red marks, nothing. What is going on with public education anyway? :)
I'm still stuck on Candy Land. It is on both of our levels. :)
you should look into playing speed scrabble. i don't like real scrabble because i am no good with words. but speed scrabble is fun. it's easy but still more than i want to write to explain it. so i'll have to do it when we're there in april.
Oh, I was going to say the Scrabble we played at the Wilson's last Spring was really lots of fun. But I don't remember how to play it, so was going to suggest you ask Britty. Then I got down to the end of the blogs--and there was a note from Britty about it. I even toyed with the idea of getting a scrabble game to play the speed version, but it would definitely be "Speed Scrabble Solitaire".
