Poverty....

Today in Biology we talked about poverty. Our professor showed an amazing CD and after class a young man showed this video to the professor. I had not seen this before and felt like I should share it.

Remember: Fast Offerings and Perpetual Education Fund. As well as any other charity you feel so inclined to support.

I have the neatest thing to share with you. Go to Kiva.org It is a lending site that helps people in poverished countries start businesses so they can support their family. When Bill was layed up with his shoulder surgery, he saw that Bill Clinton was going to be on Oprah. Clinton was talking about his new book "Giving" Bill bought the book and has read it. Anyway, on this Kiva site, you can read about people that need $, how much, what they'll use it for, and how much is still needed, where they are from etc. You LOAN the $ to them and when their business gets started, they pay the loan back. Because of the high volume of people now loaning because of the Oprah show and Clinton's book, they've limited the loaning to $25. You can keep track of your money and when you're paid back, you can get your money back or reloan it to someone else. I thought this would be a wonderful Christmas gift to children. $25. They make the choice of who they want to loan it to and then they follow that person and see how they are doing and when your child's money is paid back. They can continue with the same $25 and help many people. They can start a journal at the site for themselves. You need to check it out. Anyway, this goes along with your post on poverty. Let me know what you think.

WOW, I loved what your Mom said about Kiva. I recently found out about that organization as well. Brien is in the process of his Eagle project and he is working to raise money for the Ponheary Ly Foundation. $12 will provide a uniform, shoes and school supplies for one child for a year. We spend twice that much on McDonalds or some other fast food place on a busy night when I can't get home to cook. Imagine the good we could do if we really started thinking about where and how to spend our extra money. Thanks for helping me to get my mind back into perspective.

Janet, I am going to check that out. What a great thing to do! I have some serious studying for another history midterm, but as soon as I get a break, I am checking it out! Thanks.

wyatt and i have had the opportunity volunteer at DI. every time we go they show a video about the church's humanitarian aid program. it's really a touching movie and explains how not only do we as a church donate food, clothes and money but people are sent on missions to teach valuable skills to the natives on how to survive and make a better life for themselves. it's a really touching movie - i always get teary eyed and wyatt even admitted to getting choked up. i think it's wonderful that the church is able demonstrate and show by example the principles of the gospel and being like Jesus. it's a short video in a series - i think the big video is called "no greater calling" or maybe that's just the title to the short film.

Thanks for sharing that video. I forget how spoiled I am sometimes which is really sad. I lived in Mexico for two months and saw similar circumstances. I felt like such a spoiled American brat.

I am so glad that we can trust where our tithing funds are going. Some of these charities you have no idea. Thanks for the reminder! :)Katie
